Going Vertical in the Heart of Pittsburgh

It was the kind of all-nighter that only happens when you’re building something you truly believe in.

The other night, the team and I pushed through the early morning hours, fueled by coffee and sheer momentum, boxing up 30 Forge of Creation systems. The destination? The Penn State 4-H program at the Franco Harris Center.

After we finally got everything loaded and arrived at the center, I took a moment to stand atop the hill and look out over Pittsburgh. Seeing the skyline from that vantage point, a striking parallel hit me.

Pittsburgh is a city defined by its verticality. When the rivers and the rugged terrain dictated that we couldn't build outward, American ingenuity took over, and we built up. The steel high-rises and towering architecture are a permanent testament to adapting to your environment.

But looking at those same buildings, I couldn't help but think about the people living and working inside them. In a vertical world, horizontal space is a luxury. Traditional gardening requires square footage that apartments, condos, and high-rise office floors simply do not have. For a lot of residents and professionals, the desire to grow their own food or bring vibrant, self-sustaining life into their space feels completely out of reach.

That is exactly the problem we set out to solve.

With the Forge of Creation, we took a page straight out of Pittsburgh’s playbook: if you can’t grow out, you grow up.

We designed the system to take the concept of the urban garden and flip it on its head. By going vertical, we make it possible to bring agriculture directly into the apartment living room or the corporate boardroom. And because we utilize clean, highly efficient media like perlite—leaving the messy soil completely out of the equation—it becomes a sleek, viable addition to any indoor space.

Delivering these 30 systems to the 4-H program today was about more than just dropping off equipment. It was about putting the future of agriculture into the hands of the next generation. But it’s also a powerful reminder for the rest of us navigating this landscape of concrete and glass.

You don’t need a backyard to cultivate something incredible. You just need to look up.
